Is uncontrollable AI really an existential risk?
moderated by Karl von Wendt

AI is developing rapidly and we may achieve human-level general intelligence within a decade or two. Some effective altruists worry that we might run into an existential catastrophe if we don't solve the "alignment problem" soon. At the same time, most people outside the EA and AI Safety communities ignore the problem completely, classifying it as "science fiction" and comparing fears about it to worrying about "overpopulation on Mars". So is there really a problem, or are some of us just trapped in some kind of hysterical bubble? And if it is real, what can we do to better understand and mitigate the risk? Let's discuss!

You can find more info about uncontrollable AI in Karl's post on Lesswrong and on 80,000 hours.

Hello, i haven´t used CHATGPT already but I want to use it in some days. Now, I know my first question there: "Do you know HAL 9000. Was it / Is it your grandfather?" :-) Have a good day!

Hey ! I've heard about effective altruism a few times over the last years und I'm interested in learning more about it. I would love to join the next meeting and think together with others over relevant questions.

Hey Lina, thank you for the message. I'm looking forward to meeting you! You're welcome to arrive a little earlier so we can get to know each other before the event starts.

Hi! Carl, Ben and me (Tifenn) will be joining for the first time out of curiosity and interest! What can we expect about the event? Is there going to be a talk from Karl and a following discussion about it? Anyway we're excited to participate ;)

Hi Tifenn, great to hear! Exactly: There will be a talk by Karl and then a discussion about the topic. Looking forward to meeting you – let me know if you have any questions in advance.
