The Trump administration is doing many drastic things since the inauguration. Many actions have already been reversed or paused, e.g. through popular pushback or legal challenge. Many actions are in conflict with US law (e.g. shuttering USAID, freezing funds beyond 45 days) and it's unclear how they will pan out. Other events are yet to occur (e.g. debt ceiling negotiation).

With the US being the biggest player globally, these actions affect many important EA areas. How are people looking at this?

Here's a few areas that might be affected, per Zack Beauchamp from Vox:

  • Less reliable nuclear umbrella -> higher risk of nuclear proliferation
  • Retraction from NATO & eroding the resurrect for territorial sovereignty -> higher risk of territorial expansion wars
  • Less invested in global infectious disease control -> higher risk of pandemics
  • Trade wars, economic instability -> global economic slowdown
